When a PT Student Fell in Love

Efosa is the founder of Physical Therapy Haven

I first met Physical Therapy my sophomore year in college at the University of Massachusetts. I had always had a propensity for science and health, always intrigued with the idea of healthcare and the thought of working ‘hands on’ with other people. But when I declared Physical Therapy as my tract that fall of 2004, I must admit that it felt sort of like a blind date. It was a profession that I wasn’t too familiar with. I was introduced to the idea and the prospect by my older sister, Eseosa, who was a DPT student at NYIT and who is currently a Doctor of Physical Therapy in California. As I learned more about the profession through my prerequisites and my volunteer experiences, the relationship grew stronger. We took another step forward when I started my first semester at the University of Scranton in the DPT program. I was lucky enough to have great school mates and great professors who instilled in me and my classmates a thorough confidence backed by great lessons. I took that confidence and courage to my first internship the next summer and I finally realized that the beauty of our profession lies in the combination of the foundational sciences as well as the art of dealing with people. It is that unique combination that gives the profession so much potential and can make it so effective when applied appropriately. The very idea of the profession is a noble one: helping people with our hands and our words. This profession gives us a chance to touch and better others as well as to better ourselves. With a ready ear or a successful intervention we have the ability to change things and have a positive impact. As I made these discoveries, my experiences were beginning to be more than I ever hoped for when the relationship first started. Finally, when I went to the National Student Conclave in San Jose in the fall of 2008, I was swept off of my feet and it all came together. I was blindsided with love. My relationship and engagement with physical therapy as far as I could tell was just beginning to reach new heights. Through our bond, I was learning something new every day, and I was able to network with my peers and the veterans of our profession. Every contact made had a strong impression on me. The honor to share in this profession with others, and to grow in the journey, creates a bond that is unbreakable. Each day in this relationship brings something new. The diversity and dynamics of this profession is an ongoing crusade, and now I am madly in love.
I would imagine and suspect that others as well – patients and prospective students alike – would also have these emotions that you have had and I have had. The problem is that - not enough people ever get these same great experiences. They just never get beyond the first stage that is necessary in most relationships – They may meet Physical Therapy… but they never get to know it. That’s where we come in. We need to be unselfish in our love and spread it to others. We need to play matchmaker and let the public know how great of a profession this is. We have to be advocates in all that we do. When we practice in our rotations, when our friends ask us about the scope of what we do, and when we do interviews, we have to constantly present our profession in a bright and truthful light.
To reach our goals and to fulfill the potential of our profession, we must all work together. Please join us on this journey as we charge towards Vision 20/20.
Thank You
