Tests for a torn rotator cuff or rotator cuff impingement
Have the patient seated with arm relaxed and stand to the rear of the patient. The examiner palpates anterior to the anterior edge of the acromion with one hand while holding the patient’s flexed elbow with the other. The examiner passively extends the shoulder while slowly rotating the shoulder into external and internal rotation. The greater tuberosity will be prominent and a depression of about 1 finger width will be felt if a rotator cuff tear is present.
